Healed of Grief Reading “Science and Health” by Mary Baker Eddy

Two weeks ago, on Saturday, my son and I took our puppy to the vet because it was time for my pet to leave this world. She was a very old dog, so to speak, and her quality of life was decreasing. So, the vet put our puppy to sleep. It was the end for her in this human experience, but not in divine Life, which is eternal. It was a very hard and sad moment, especially for me, to say goodbye to our precious pet because this little dog was such a good friend and companion to me for almost 20 years. Her name was Izzie, and she was a French poodle. When I wrote the practitioner about this situation, she told me I should be thankful for so many years that this puppy was with me and my son, and that we enjoyed together.

Nevertheless, that same Saturday, around 4 a.m. I woke up with a horrible feeling of anxiety, fear, a very ugly suggestion of separation and grief. I couldn’t calm myself down, I tried to pray, but I couldn’t focus at all, to feel God’s presence with me. Suddenly, a thought came to me: “Go to the book. Go to the book.” So, I immediately opened our textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, to the chapter “Science of Being.” I started reading it, and after almost 5 minutes, I started to calm down, to feel at peace, to feel better. The storm of suggestions was pacified with the Truth. And I could feel that I was not alone or separated from Love at that moment. God was with me. Then, I continued reading for half an hour. I thanked God and His Christ, and I could go back to sleep again.

I am grateful because, on this occasion, reading this holy book was so strong for me. It was the light that shone, and the darkness could not stand before the light. It was an opportunity to feel the spiritual power of this holy text and realize once again what Science and Health really mean for us and the world: it is the Word, the Truth, the Love, the divine Spirit revealed, the Light for everyone who reads it.
