Sense of Loss After Husband Passed Healed

Elizabeth, NH

When my dear husband passed on five years ago I was very adamant to myself that I would not identify with the word “widow,” after all a widow is certainly the definition of someone who has lost something. We are taught in Christian Science to understand that we are right now seen as perfect by our loving Father-Mother God. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discover and Founder of Christian Science writes, “Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts.”(Science and Health, page 261) This is a very practical teaching, and I knew that it was important – very important – to my well being; that I must identify only with Good things – only with the things that God has made. Another thought that came to mind during this time was from the Bible: “Thy maker is thine husband.”(Isaiah 54:5) To me, this meant that all of the husband qualities that were needed at any time would be available to me. I hadn’t lost any of those qualities with the passing of my husband, all of the helpfulness, knowledge, tenderness, courage and care that he represented would always be with me. For those qualities are actually the very expression of God!

I have had so many examples of this Truth come to pass in my experience over the last five years. The “husband qualities” have shown up in many different forms and always at just the right time. One example was about a month ago when I walked into my basement after being away from my house overnight. I was met by a very loud grinding noise that was coming from the furnace. It was extremely alarming! I knew immediately that I must see that God was on the scene and that I did know what to do, because God is ever present and ever available and, God, as Mrs. Eddy teaches us, is the one Mind that we each reflect. I immediately called my friend, who told me how to remove a certain cover and loosen a particular wire. When I did this, the noise stopped. When my friend came over with the heating technician the next day, they both were in disbelief that I had disconnected a different wire than the one that was intended over the phone. But indeed, it was the very one that was needed.

God IS an ever-present help in any kind of trouble, and we can never be left alone when we know that All of the wonderful God qualities are always by our side.
