Letting Go of Old Identities

Jeremy, N.J.

Right before I came to this church I was going through perhaps the most difficult period in my life, but I am thankful how during that time, I ended up having a thought that I have since learned to regard as an angel message right from God. It was the realization that I needed to let go of all the different ways that I had been identifying myself if I was to have any hope of moving forward in my life. For so long at that point I had self-identified as a dad, son, graphic designer, and a slew of far worse things such as dumb, ugly, useless, lazy, and so on.

Coming here, and beginning to learn Christian Science and working with a practitioner helped me to start seeing the difference between our human identities and the divine individuality that God created us with. Humanly it seems important to label things and people, and to have beliefs of division and limitation, but I see now those things have no place in God’s reality. All He wants is for us to be ready to listen to and act on His Word, and express His qualities to all we meet. God may direct us to do something for 10 years in a row, but that doesn’t change our divine identity at all. We are still here to express Truth and reflect Love and embody Life as the Christ leads us each and every day.

I am so grateful to have this true identity to hold to. It has helped me steer clear of the trap of feeling I am only here in Plainfield to build websites, write programs, edit audio, or make videos, and has made it so I am free to follow the Christ wherever it leads, including this new role as a practitioner. If I was still trapped in those out-dated human identities I would never have been able to accept where God was leading me.

I am so grateful for all that Christian Science, this church, and practitioner support have blessed me with over the years. How wonderful that God has given Christian Science to the world, and how wonderful that this Church has kept the high standard intact over all these years.
