Remembering Our Victories

by Mary Beth Singleterry

Progress is God’s law, and it’s not a path of flowers. We’ve all faced challenges in one way or another, but as we grow and continue to move forward, no matter what unfolds, your experience will improve. I’m so grateful for the wonderful teaching that we receive at this church in Christian Science. Today, I was reading an interesting article, and a rabbi contributed to it. He was discussing the root word of the word “testimony.” In Hebrew, it is to repeat or to do again. he said that when someone shares a testimony, the same power is released, which enables it to happen again. I can’t help but think this is why, at our testimony meetings, “My soul does magnify the Lord,” that we are amplifying what God has done in our lives. By saying it and repeating it, it sends out a mighty power that helps clarify and purify the atmosphere of what would seem to be a lot of negative and fearful thoughts.

This rabbi also said this is why the Jewish people think it’s so important to tell their children of past victories and also what happened when they had been disobedient. You know, I have thought about that in the Old Testament, where you hear them going over and over how they were led out of bondage, as described in those chapters in Exodus. I’ve always been impressed by that and they say to write it on your forehead all these wonderful truths. Hence, it is so important you think you won’t forget things. Still, sometimes you do, and when we gather together and share these testimonies and discuss the healing power of God, it is a very mighty power. He went on to say they believe the power of what God did yesterday can be released again and again. Again, and of course, we know that’s true because God is ever present and his power is ever present, so it is ever present to be released in more victories, more healings, more wondrous work.
