Twenty-Third Psalm
by Mary Beth Singleterry
A while ago, I heard someone give a simple explanation of the Twenty-Third Psalm. It was done anonymously. I found it helpful. I made a few edits of my own.
“The Lord is my shepherd.” That’s your relationship with God.“I shall not want.” He is your supply.“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.” He gives you rest.“He leadeth me beside the still waters. That’s refreshment.“He restoreth my soul.” God gives us healing.“He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness.” Guidance.“For His name’s sake.” That gives us our purpose.“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.” No matter how difficult a time might seem, God is there walking with us.“I will fear no evil.” He gives us protection.“For thou art with me.” That’s His faithfulness.“Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.” His discipline.“Thou preparest the table before me in the presence of mine enemies.” There can be no malpractice.“Thou anointest my head with oil.” Consecration.“My cup runneth over.” His abundance.“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.” His great blessing on us all.“And I will dwell in the house.” That’s His security.“Of the Lord forever.” For eternity.I thought that was such a beautiful, simple explanation and treatment of that beautiful psalm that the psalmist David gave us.
