Malarial fever healed (1883-1888): A friend had spoken to [my mother] about Christian Science and expressed a desire to find out something more about it.Mother recommended that she take up the questions she had in mind directly with Mrs. Eddy and then wrote to Mrs. Eddy making an appointment for this friend. While on her way to Boston to keep the appointment [with Mrs. Eddy], the friend stopped in to see Mother to thank her, and to her surprise found Mother seriously ill with malarial fever. Mother had hesitated to ask for Mrs.Eddy’s help, knowing that she was so busy, and Father had called in a doctor. He pronounced the case so serious that I remember Father came home early that day, and I stayed away from school. The lady, whose name I do not recall, kept her appointment with Mrs.Eddy and told her how ill Mother was. Upon returning to Chelsea, she stopped in to inquire about Mother, and to her astonishment found her up walking around. Mother always attributed this healing to Mrs. Eddy, feeling sure that when she had been informed of her illness that Mrs. Eddy had immediately taken up the work and so restored her to health.
