Emphysema Healed

H.B., New Jersey

Recently I got myself into a terrible situation. I was having difficulty breathing but I absolutely refused to get any help in Christian Science, even though I was lovingly encouraged to do so by my dear friends in the Plainfield Christian Science Church. I insisted on “working it out myself”, a gross misconception that I had from my previous experience in the “Boston” church. This went on for two weeks during which time I got progressively worse and finally could not eat anything and was very fearful.

I admitted myself to the VA Hospital and was quickly moved to the intensive care unit. Finally, in my desperation, I reached out for help from a Christian Science practitioner in the Plainfield Church. I was met with firm love and reassurance, and absolutely no condemnation. After two days of tests, the doctors decided that I was suffering from emphysema.

On the third day, when I was moved out of intensive care, the practitioner came to visit me with a Bible in hand. I was still quite fearful with restrictive breathing, so I welcomed every word of comfort. He read the 91st Psalm and what a wonderful atmosphere came about the place! I sat up and sang, in full voice, my favorite hymn 412, “O dreamer, leave thy dreams for joyful waking, O captive rise and sing, for thou art free”. There was no more fear. The fellow in the bed next to me was smiling.

I was released from the hospital a day and a half later. Within a couple of days after that, I resumed my normal activities without restriction, walking about town, vacuuming the Sunday School!

Only Christian Science could have eradicated this condition so quickly. Mrs. Eddy states in the textbook: “The power of Christian Science and divine Love is omnipotent. It is indeed adequate to unclasp the hold and to destroy disease, sin, and death.” My healing was a demonstration of this. I am so grateful for the work of the practitioner, and for this independent Christian Science that never condemns, but loves and meets the need wherever it is found.
