A Prognosis “Never Able to Communicate Again” Reversed Through Prayer
Mara, MS
I’m so grateful to have found the Plainfield Christian Science Independent Church and for everything I’m learning about Christian Science. With the support of this church and my practitioner, my life has truly changed for the better. It has also blessed my whole family in different ways. They’ve experienced healings, and they’ve seen the changes in my life as well. I’m now able to talk to my husband and children about God’s presence in their lives, and they’re very receptive. My daughter, who is studying speech and language pathology, recently had to complete a required rotation at a hospital under a speech pathologist. Her real goal was to work with children in a school setting. So, she wasn’t thrilled about this part of her training at first. I shared with her that this could be a wonderful opportunity to love these patients, to help them, and to see them as God sees them. Not long after, she told me a beautiful story about one of her clients, how her faith in God helped reverse a very negative prognosis. She even wrote a testimony about it that I wanted to share. This testimony is one of the many examples of how Christian Science has impacted my family and the people around us.
This is what she wrote. “I am so grateful that my mom found Plainfield Church. I’ve seen firsthand how much the church has supported her, encouraged her, and walked with her through so many seasons of life. Through her sharing the things she’s learned from Plainfield, she has helped me grow closer to God as well. Your church has not only blessed her life—it has overflowed into mine.
I also wanted to share a testimony from my own life that has strengthened my faith even more. Going into my hospital externship, I had never stepped foot in a hospital before. I was very nervous about the trauma and the difficult situations I knew I would witness in the rehab unit at Forrest General Hospital. But through prayer and positive thinking, God began to change my perspective. He helped me see each patient through His eyes, and He allowed me the privilege of working with them as they tried to return to their previous lives.
One of the patients I was assigned to was a woman who had just undergone surgery to remove a tumor from the frontal lobe of her brain. On the very first day I met her, she was unable to communicate. The neurologist had explained that the part of her brain responsible for language had been removed during surgery. As I evaluated her, it became clear she might need to rely on an AAC device—a machine that speaks aloud for patients who cannot speak—and that she might never communicate verbally again.
Sitting with that realization broke my heart. I went to God in prayer, asking Him to guide me and show me a way to help this sweet woman. And God reminded me of something I had learned in my studies: even when the left side of the brain cannot produce language, the right side can sometimes still access musicality. Music can become a pathway when speech is blocked.
The very next day, her daughter mentioned that she was a deeply religious woman who loved singing in her church choir. So together, we began to sing Amazing Grace. As we sang, I watched her face light up. A smile appeared, tears filled her eyes, and for the first time since her surgery, she spoke. She squeezed my hand and said, “Thank you.”
Later that day, her pastor came to visit. She hugged him and whispered, “Thank you, God.” In the sessions that followed, she continued to speak-simple phrases like “Please God, help me.” Slowly, with more prayer and more therapy, she began forming full sentences. By the end of the week, she was telling me short stories about her family and the horses she loves so dearly.
Through God’s miracle and His mercy, she no longer needed an AAC device. She was communicating again, something she had been told she might never do. This experience reminded me that God’s power is not limited by medical predictions. He can restore what seems impossible. And I’m so grateful that He allowed me to witness His healing hand at work right in front of me.
With love, Abby”
