Over-Thinking About Problems Replaced by Prayer

Imogene, Australia

A few months back I woke in the middle of the night thinking on a work problem that soon turned into a cascading sequence of various problems and as I didn’t immediately reach out to God about it, I soon got caught up thinking about all these problems. Sleep had certainly gone by this point so I got up and started to reason humanly through each one of these problems, but as soon as I solved one problem another one or even two problems replaced it and so I applied my human thinking to the next problem and the next problem and the next and so on. I am so grateful that we are taught here to know when to reach out if you need help, if you really can’t pull yourself back to God, that we have the most dedicated practitioners there to help, so this was a time when although I felt a bit embarrassed I could recognise that I needed help and so I called a Plainfield practitioner. I needn’t have felt embarrassed because she was right there, no ridicule of my need, ready to work for God to help me. She listened as it all tumbled out, all these interconnected problems and then she said with holy power and conviction: “This is only error trying to stop you from doing God’s work,” then she recited our Daily Duty with God’s good grace quote : “It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion, and not be made to forget nor to neglect his duty to God, to his Leader, and to mankind.”(Mary Baker Eddy). With each word that she spoke, all this agitated thought was released and with such immediate and buoyant relief I actually laughed out loud because I could see that yes this was exactly what error was trying to do – get me stressed about the nonsense of humanity when we know that evil is quote “no thing, mind, nor power” as dearest Mrs Eddy writes. This was a great lesson for me and another clear demonstration of a pure Christian Science practitioner.

Over the months since then, in applying this lesson to thought – “to not be made to forget or to neglect my duty” – I have seen God shut the lions mouths in many situations in my life. Thanks to the teaching at this Church I am learning to train my mentality to deny any ground to error, to refrain from wasting my thought or energy in arguing with evil – and to firmly and ferociously at times turn evil out of my thought and keep it out. I loved how Christina from Mexico shared about the dome of Truth protecting her thinking – what a beautiful image that is! Thank you dear Christina. I continue to learn that God is the only way out any problem for me and for all and for the world. The Holy Bible is full of instruction on this: “Look unto me, and be ye saved,”… “the kingdom of God is within you”… “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” – it is all there written plainly throughout the Bible, and Mrs Eddy’s textbook and writings and the writings of our early workers also. This all just shows me more on how diligent we need to be in our own thought – the battle is within and through God we share His victory over evil.
