The Fruit of Conquered Sin
Bruce, NJ
I really love the watching point 191 from “500 Watching Points” by Gilbert Carpenter. It talks about the value of having to go through might be appeared as unpleasant circumstances. It talks about Paul who took pleasure in infirmities. I got to admit there was a time when this really didn’t appeal too much to me at all. I just felt like, “Oh, wouldn’t it be nice to sit at home, be comfortable, and just relax for a while and not do much?” In fact, I remember one occasion when I was doing just that. Then all of a sudden, this disturbing thing arose and I had to take care of it. How much better I felt after I got up and did what I was supposed to do.
I was amazed at how much was accomplished. Whereas if I would just sit at home and do nothing, nothing would have been accomplished. It reminds me of a verse in one of our hymns that says that peace is the fruit of conquered sin. You may not think of having to conquer sin as being very peaceful, but there’s no way around it. It’s something that has to be done. God has all given us dominion. Remember that. Don’t forget that. The whole idea is we’re here to exercise that dominion in a godly fashion and to do good. It’s a whole new light on the concept of “peace, the fruit of conquered sin.”(hymn 276) I’m very thankful for this instruction and it gives a clear exam a clear light on our purpose for being here and that is to serve.
