True Happiness
Gary, NJ
I’m so grateful for the many life changes I’ve experienced through Christian Science from practitioners and a teacher, Mrs Evans, in this church. I came to Planfield many years ago, and one of the lessons that I am particularly grateful for is to have been taught that God is all there is and that as his children, we have unlimited good available to us. I first got to Planfield, and I had a lot of limited concepts about life and myself. One of them that I was struggling with was how to be happy. Now, this may seem strange, but when I came here, I thought happiness could be found in having a certain kind of education, a certain kind of job, hanging out with certain people you know, or accomplishing certain things. For a while, I even thought that happiness could be found in playing and winning games. Anyway, I pursued what I thought would make me happy. However, after a few moments of what I thought was happiness, I would generally end up disappointed and still struggling to find true happiness.
When I got here, there was a teacher of Christian Science, Mrs Evans, who was also a practitioner, and she taught me that happiness was not like what I had thought. Not anything like what the world believes. I learned that the key to happiness is simply to make sure I am doing what God has for me to do and use the talents that God has given me. I found that it always means helping others. We all have talents, and we should put them to use, whether it’s in our church, in our business, or anywhere in our lives to help others. That is the only way to find true happiness. Certainly, nothing selfish could ever bring lasting happiness well there’s a there’s a saying that I’ve found a few years ago that I hit home and and I don’t know who the author of it was but the saying is, “Happiness is the hunger to give while unhappiness is the hunger to get.” I do things a lot differently now. I don’t play games as much as I used to, and I’m grateful to say that I am a much happier person as a result of this change. I have more time to do what God wants me to do to help the cause of Christian Science, and in that, I have to say I have found the greatest happiness I’ve ever known. I’m grateful to the teacher and practitioners in this church. I’m grateful to Mary Baker for giving us this science that leads us to everything good in our lives. I’m grateful to Christ Jesus for Christianity for the example and the teaching that he has set for us.
