Protection During and After Flooding in Home

Stephanie, NC.

I am very grateful for God’s care when my first floor was flooded. I noticed that the ceiling of my kitchen started sloping, and then water started dripping down. In the middle of the night, I heard a big bang in the ceiling, and lots of water came down onto the hardwood kitchen and living room floor and beyond. I ran upstairs because the piano’s right above there, and it was still on the support beam, so I didn’t have to worry about that coming through. Later that morning, I called the insurance company. They came out, and they couldn’t find a cause that would give me coverage. The entire first floor needed to be dried and refinished to properly repair the hardwood. Then, I called a roof repairman and a plumber, but nobody could figure out what had caused this. It would be between $25,000 and $30,000 to repair the damage, and I would need to be out of the house for several weeks.

At this point I really I had to turn to God for help. I knew it was the right idea for me to live in a habitable home and that God supported all the right ideas. During the day, my students came and saw it all. One commented how lousy insurance companies can be, which I immediately refuted in my thoughts. I knew that I had to look at things in the right way and know that this was going to work out. Then, my four o’clock student arrived. The mother looked at it and said, “Would you like me to look under your house and in your attic?” I looked at her pretty dress and said, “You have got to be kidding.” She said, “No, I’ll take a look. This is my specialty. The city hires me to solve water problems in commercial buildings.” Midway through the lesson, she announced that she knew what had happened and to immediately call the HVAC company that had installed my system and ask them to come over in the morning; she said that she would text me later on and tell me word for word exactly what to tell them.

The next morning, the HVAC company came over, and I told him where to look. He came back to the kitchen and immediately accepted responsibility. It was an improper installation. They didn’t use the parts that came with the new system. He says, “Ma’am, the mini-split is directly above your piano. The leak is between that unit and your roof. It should have crashed down and destroyed your piano.” Then he lowered his head and stared at the floor. “What I cannot figure out is how the water found a pathway to the sidewalls and came down to your kitchen the way it did.” I said, “Well, I did pray about it.” And he said, “You must have, only God could do that. Look,” he said, “I already called the owner and our insurance will take care of everything. You can book a hotel for five weeks, and we’ll cover all your meals and repairs.” Then I said, “Well, let me call my insurance company. I’ll do it right now.” So I called my own company and put them on the phone with each other, and now my company said they would cover for up to six weeks with meals and take care of everything. So here I had two insurance companies, not one but two, wanting to take care of me, but what it came down to was that God was taking care of me.

I’m grateful about how I stayed calm and trusted God through this whole process. I knew that it was all going to work out and kept my thoughts open. I’m very grateful for Christian Science, and I love insurance companies I always have, and I always will, because God’s in charge; they aren’t.
