Acid Reflux Healed

D. A. – New Jersey

“Mind regulates the condition of the stomach, bowels, and food, the temperature of children and of men, and matter does not.” (Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy)

A week ago we had our regular Tuesday night class, and one of the citations in the Lesson was the one above. I had read it a few times before class, but not until our Teacher went over it, did it hit home. I then decided to work with it until I was healed.

Seven years ago, in Haiti, I was diagnosed with what is called Acid Reflux Disease, and it is quite painful when the attacks come. I was told I had to have a tube down my throat to see what was going on down there. It frightened me so much that I put it off for more than three months, until I could no longer bear it, and had to give in. It is a most unpleasant experience to go through. They then told me I had a Hiatal hernia. I was put on medication, which took all the pain away. I could eat anything I wanted. Just one pill a day, and it was over.

So for seven years I took the medication. It was second nature to me. When I arrived in Plainfield, and joined the church, it never occurred to me to ask for help. The medication took care of the pain and, as far as I was concerned, the problem was taken care of. Then I ran out of medication. The very next day the pain started. I had forgotten how bad it was. Just imagine a dragon spewing fire out of his mouth. That is what it felt like. The burning was such that I felt if I opened my mouth, fire would come out. I then started to work on the problem as our Teacher taught us to do. I knew this was not from a loving God, and would not accept it. The dragon fire went away, but it was still painful. Then the Tuesday night class changed everything. I doubled my work for three days after the class, using the citation from Science and Health. It was less painful, but still there. I wrote a thank you note to our Teacher for the Tuesday class and mentioned what I was doing about the problem; how the passage was helping me, and that I knew I was on my way to full recovery. That was on Friday mid-day.

Late Friday afternoon, something was different. The pain had gone completely, and I was moving about with ease. I thought immediately of our Teacher, and felt she had prayed for me. On Sunday morning after the service, I asked her if she had, and with such gentleness, she said, yes, she did. The pain never returned. It is truly a blessing. I can eat everything with no reaction; none, whatsoever.

Living Christian Science is a God-given gift. I can never be grateful enough for all I am learning, and benefiting from, in this church. It is good to learn to work for yourself, but having a practitioner help sure makes it go faster. The quote above applies to everything.
