God is Mind Not Matter

In the Roundtable on Feb 25, 2024, the following quote from Deepak Chopra was presented, “How does a watery mass of organic chemicals manage to think?” When I heard this, a light bulb went off. Since the body and brain are only a watery mass with some chemicals thrown in, how can they tell me anything?

Water and chemicals cannot think, and neither possess a mind that is able to think. Therefore, how can my skin decide to swell, my ears decide to stop working, my eyes decide not to see, my brain becomes befuddled, or some part of this body decide to ache? These are part of that watery mass with chemicals that lack a mind. Without a mind, there can be no intelligence, reasoning, awareness, action, reaction, understanding, or knowing. This watery mass cannot change itself.

Any supposed evidence from this watery mass of a sick body or mind is, therefore, erroneous. This body obviously cannot create any conditions for me because it lacks a mind necessary to accomplish this. It has no ability to act or create on its own. Mrs. Eddy states on page 14 of Science and Health, “Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, — neither in nor of matter, — and the body will then utter no complaints.”

I love the Sunday Roundtables because they often explain the rules of Christian Science in ways that increase my understanding. How fortunate we are to have the Plainfield Christian Science Independent Church and the dedication of all its members.
