Neighbor Helps Stop Busy Traffic

Shahidat, Maryland.

There was a lovely discussion at last Sunday’s Roundtable about giving God thanks for all the good that happens in our lives. There is no such thing as chance or coincidence. I was reminded of this while walking my dog last Monday as we walked across a major intersection in my quiet residential neighborhood. The intersection is now a four-way stop, which makes crossing very easy. However, late last year, before additional stop signs were added, my dog and I were waiting to cross on the way home from our morning walk. Whenever we started to enter the street, the cars would whiz by, refusing to yield. Now, we would have to retreat to the curb, which happened to us several times.

Several other pedestrians just ran past us across the street, but since running is not currently in my repertoire, we had to wait until there was a prolonged break in traffic to attempt to cross. I figured when our time to cross came, we would be able to do so safely, and so I was content to wait. As we waited, a man came out from a house across the way in what looked like his pajamas, and he yelled over to me, asking if we were ready to cross. I yelled back, “Yes.” And he then walked into the street, talking loudly to himself that they don’t want to stop, but he’s going to make them stop anyway. So, he just stood there in the middle of the road, and the traffic quickly slowed down, and he gestured for us to cross. I give all credit to God for this wonderful demonstration of divine love meeting my every need. I’m grateful for the spirited Sunday Roundtable discussion.
