Finding Confidence Praying for the Weather
Mara, MS.
One evening recently, my son and I were about to take our usual after-dinner walk around the lake with our dog. Just as we were heading out, we noticed it had started to rain lightly, and we could hear thunder rumbling in the distance, getting louder. We knew our dog still needed at least a quick walk, so we decided to go out for a little bit but planned to turn back quickly if the rain got worse.
As we walked, the rain picked up and the thunder grew more frequent. At this point, we were on the other side of the lake. At first, I started to feel uneasy. I remembered past storms and how intense they could be. Our dog had seen storms before, but only from the safety of indoors. He had never actually been caught outside in one. Even though he’d never panicked, I worried this could be the time it scared him. I also started thinking about the risk of lightning striking nearby, especially with us out in the open near the lake. The idea of trying to run back in a heavy downpour with a scared dog and the possibility of dangerous lightning made me start to feel anxious.
Then I remembered some testimonies I had just heard recently about people facing threatening weather. Each of them shared how they had prayed in the moment, and through their calm, fearless trust in God, the storms didn’t end up harming them. The thought of that brought me a lot of comfort. I also thought about the Plainfield weather committee. This committee, which I’m a part of, prays for all types of weather and atmospheric conditions that affects people all over the world. I have learned so much from being involved with it. I reminded myself that dangerous weather doesn’t come from God and we don’t have to accept it. It’s just animal magnetism trying to stir up fear. I held to the truth that God was with us right then and there, surrounding us in His love and keeping us safe. He governs everything, including the weather.
As we continued our walk, the thunder faded and the rain slowed to just a few scattered drops. It suddenly felt very calm. At one point, I realized it had stopped raining completely. We were able to walk as long as we wanted , peacefully.
Not long after we came inside, I glanced out the window and was surprised to see that it had started raining again, very lightly and gently. I had to smile and just thank God for this small, quiet moment of protection and love. It was such a sweet reminder that He truly is always with us. I am very thankful l to my practitioner and all the hard workers at Plainfield. I’m very grateful that I found this church and all I am learning about Christian Science. It has truly changed my life!
