Trusting God’s Care During a Tornado

Mara, MS

Several years ago, shortly after moving to Mississippi, I had an experience that really deepened my understanding of God’s care. A tornado passed right along the edge of our property, coming very close to our home while I was inside the house with my son. Although there was significant destruction in our yard and nearby, we were completely safe. I felt such a strong sense of gratitude, recognizing God’s protecting presence.

As I later talked about this with my practitioner, I learned something more. I began to understand more clearly that God’s omnipotence is complete and that His government includes harmony in every aspect of our lives, even in what we might think of as the forces of weather. That realization led me to become more involved through prayerful support by joining the weather committee.

The following year, when tornadoes were again in the forecast for our area, I reached out to the weather committee for support. They stayed in touch with me and shared some helpful ideas to study. As we prayed and held to the understanding of God’s constant care and control, the storms never developed, and no one was harmed.

Then, just a few weeks ago, we received a tornado warning, a loud siren on our cell phones, late at night, around 10 p.m., alerting us that severe weather was approaching. At first, I felt afraid, but I quickly turned to prayer and became calm. It felt too late and sudden to reach out to anyone, so I quietly relied on what I had been learning.

I held to the idea that God is fully in control. That divine Love governs all, and that His care extends to everyone. Even as the wind became loud, whistling and intense, I continued to affirm that God holds All-power. “He holds the wind in his fists.” (Proverbs 30:4) and “Only good is going on.” Within just a few minutes, the wind died down. Although our lights flickered a few times we never even lost electricity.

We saw from radar pictures that the storm had passed by our area without causing any harm. Although there were some parts in our town that lost power, there was no destruction in our town, and our home and yard were completely untouched.

This experience has strengthened my trust in God’s ever-present care. Recently, during a Roundtable discussion, we were encouraged to look forward to trials. I’ve come to really love that idea. Seeing challenges as opportunities for growth and spiritual progress has helped me feel more empowered and less afraid.
